Cryostats

A biological cryostat is a medical device used to slice tissue and other samples very finely for analysis. The instrument is essentially a stationary freezer (the cryostat) capable of reaching temperatures within the range of −20 to −45 °C, with a rotary microtome incorporated which cuts histological and other samples extremely finely.

The microtome operates by use of an external wheel or lever which turns the blade and slices the sample. Scilogex is the manufacturer of well-designed, high-quality cryostats suitable for an endless range of applications and capable of cutting a wide diversity of specimens from undecalcified bone to brain, resins, plastics and plant tissue as well as more usual soft tissues. The Bright OTF5000 cryostat range is suitable for both research and clinical operation and can be used with either solid knives or disposable blades in the microtome. The OTF5000 range is available in three standard models of sophisication and are supplied with a long list of options and accessories to accommodate every sample-slicing need in the laboratory.

To make the day-to-day operation of this instrument as intuitive and efficient as possible, we have positioned all non-urgent functions on a side panel, away from the essential systems. We also offer a unique and portable cryostat that is one of the smallest on the market for use in laboratories where space is at a premium, or in situations in which a full-sized, full-priced cryostat cannot be justified because of infrequent use.  Uniquely, the rotary microtome of Bright's portable cryostat is of radial, flat cutting design and is capable of cutting a wide range of specimens including soft tissue, hair follicle, cardiac muscle and lung.
