Specimen Freezers

Specimen freezers are used in many laboratories for the freezing of samples in preparation for cryotomy or for the short- to medium-term storage of such frozen samples. Some of the most useful lab freezers are rapid cryo freezers that are cooled to very low temperatures and are able to freeze samples very quickly. Scilogex manufactures an extremely rapid laboratory freezer incorporating two cylindrical chambers held at -40 °C and -80 °C, respectively.

The Scilogex rapid freezer offers a wide range of benefits, making it one of the most useful sample freezers on the market. The typical cooling rate achieved with this freezer is an impressive 0.5 °C/s, allowing a rapid turn-around of samples. The lower, cooler compartment is ideal for the rapid freezing of samples, while the upper chamber can be used as a short-term storage area for specimens frozen in the lower area. One innovative feature of the Scilogex ultra low freezer is an optional seven-day timer which allows the freezer to run in standby mode when not being used, allowing both chambers to run at -40 °C. This greatly improves the running costs of the freezer and ensures maximum power saving. The temperature of the lower compartment can be reduced back down to -80 °C within as little as 15 minutes for situations where this is required. Typically, this is undertaken at the beginning of a working day. An even faster cooling rate can be achieved by incorporating a fixed block containing the rapid freezer evaporator coil into the lower chamber.

The Scilogex sample freezer is able to replace all liquid nitrogen and carbon dioxide freezing systems, greatly improving lab safety. The upper chamber has a diameter of 10.8” and a depth of 5.4”, making it a convenient size for the storage of a number of samples without consuming too much laboratory space
