How to Prevent the Spread of Coronavirus?

What is Coronavirus?

According to the World Health Organization (WHO), Coronaviruses (CoV) are a large family of viruses that cause illness ranging from the common cold to more serious diseases such as Middle East Respiratory Syndrome (MERS-CoV) and Severe Acute Respiratory Syndrome (SARS-CoV).

Coronavirus Symptoms & Disease

According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), patients with confirmed COVID-19 infections have reportedly had mild to severe respiratory illness with symptoms of:

  • Fever

  • Cough

  • Shortness of breath

Symptoms of the COVID-19 may appear in as few as 2 days or as long as 14 days after exposure. This is based on what has been seen previously as the incubation period of MERS viruses.

How Coronavirus Spreads?

The CDC states, the virus is thought to spread mainly from person-to-person.

  • Between people who are in close contact with one another (within about 6 feet).

  • Through respiratory droplets produced when an infected person coughs or sneezes.

These droplets can land in the mouths or noses of people who are nearby or possibly be inhaled into the lungs. It may be possible that a person can become infected with SARS- CoV-2 by touching a surface or object that has the virus on it and then touching their own mouth, nose, or possibly their eyes, but this is not thought to be the main way the virus spreads.

Coronavirus Prevention Guidelines

The best way to protect yourself against COVID-19 is avoid being exposed to the virus, SARS-CoV-2. The CDC recommends simple everyday preventative steps to help prevent the spread of respiratory virus, including:

Avoid touching your eyes, nose, or mouth with unwashed hands.

Practice social distancing from everyone, especially people who are sick.

Cover coughs and sneezes with a tissue or your elbow—not your hand.

Clean and disinfect frequently touched objects and surfaces daily. This includes tables, doorknobs, light switches, countertops, handles, desks, phones, keyboards, toilets, faucets and sinks.

Stay home if you experience any cold-like symptoms or become ill, except to get medical care.
