Why a standard scale fails in a wet or dusty environment

A regular bench scale is not a washdown scale. The moment water gets into the load cell housing or electronics, you're looking at an inaccurate reading at best and a dead scale at worst. In food processing, pharmaceutical manufacturing, or industrial weighing environments, it happens often.

Ingress failure

Water or cleaning chemicals reach the load cell or electronics. The scale reads inaccurately or stops working. A repair job on a basic bench scale often costs more than the scale itself.

The Gladiator steps up to IP68 and full grade 304 stainless steel construction throughout, including the housing. Capacities run from 8 kg up to 150 kg, with pan sizes from 250x250mm up to 450x600mm.

Mettler-Toledo

Mettler-Toledo is a premium industrial weighing brand. They don't publish list prices publicly - you request a quote, which tells you something about where the pricing lands. For bench washdown scales in the Aqua's capacity range, Mettler-Toledo equivalents typically run roughly twice the price. You're paying for the brand's software ecosystem, compliance documentation library, and global service network. Calibration

All three scales use external calibration with weights - something your staff can do in-house without a service call. Internal auto-calibration, which some premium brands sell as a feature, simply adds cost to the purchase price. For most industrial and food processing environments, external calibration on a set schedule is perfectly adequate.

Replacement vs. repair

For bench-scale equipment, replacement is often more economical than depot repair when something fails outside warranty. For the PT platform - a longer-term capital purchase - the stainless construction and standard load cell components mean there's no unusual service infrastructure required.

1. What does IP67 vs IP68 vs IP66 mean for a washdown scale?

These are ingress protection ratings that define how well the scale is sealed against water and dust. IP66 protects against powerful water jets from any direction - suitable for hose-down cleaning. IP67 adds protection against water immersion up to one meter for 30 minutes. IP68 covers continuous or prolonged immersion at depths greater than one meter, to specifications agreed between the manufacturer and the user. For most food processing and lab environments, IP67 is sufficient. If the scale will sit in a floor drain area or be submerged during cleaning, IP68 is the right choice.

2. Are these scales legal for trade?

These scales are not NTEP-certified for legal-for-trade use. If your application requires legal-for-trade certification - retail food sales, for example - check the Scilogex legal-for-trade scales and balances category for the right instrument.

3. What's the difference between a washdown scale and a waterproof scale?

The terms are often used interchangeably, but a washdown scale specifically refers to a scale designed to withstand cleaning with water jets or hoses in an industrial or food processing setting. "Waterproof" is a less precise term. IP-rated scales with IP66, IP67, or IP68 have defined, tested protection levels. A scale described only as "waterproof" without an IP rating doesn't tell you much about what it can actually handle.

4. Can I use the PT platform with any weight indicator I already own?

The PT platform ships with a standard shielded cable for connection to an Adam indicator. Compatibility with non-Adam indicators depends on the connector and signal type used by your existing indicator. 5. Do these scales need to be calibrated, and can I do it myself?
