A thermal mixer maintains constant temperature while mixing samples. A thermocycler rapidly changes temperature in programmed cycles for PCR. Thermal mixers are for sample prep, incubation, and reactions at steady temperatures. Thermocyclers are specifically for DNA amplification.
Only if you work with temperature-sensitive enzymes, need to hold samples below room temperature, or run reactions requiring temperature ramps down from heated states. Most molecular biology protocols work fine with heating-only models. Cooling adds cost - only buy it if your protocols specifically require it.

With normal use, blocks last indefinitely - they're solid aluminum. The heating elements and motors are the wear components, typically lasting 5-10 years with regular use. Unlike water baths, there's no corrosion or contamination buildup in the blocks themselves.
Most applications work well between 300-1000 RPM. Lower speeds (300-500 RPM) for gentle mixing of proteins or large volumes. Medium speeds (500-800 RPM) for standard molecular biology protocols. High speeds (800-1500 RPM) for vigorous mixing, cell lysis, or small volumes requiring rapid heat transfer.
Temperature calibration should be verified annually for GLP compliance, but the units don't drift significantly. Unlike complex instruments, there's not much to go wrong - it's a heating element, a temperature sensor, and a motor. Basic temperature verification with a calibrated thermometer is usually sufficient.
